Cho, Y. H., & Lim, K. Y. (2017). Effectiveness of collaborative learning with 3D virtual worlds. British Journal of Educational Technology, 48(1), 202-211.
This article explains the use of collaborative learning with a virtual world. The research was conducted with secondary school students. It found out that collaborative problem solving and collaborative observation were far more effective than teacher’s instructions. Students learned better in a collaborative environment.
The article basically focuses on collaborative problem solving and collaborative observation using a virtual world. About CPS it says that students develop a better understanding of a topic through CPS, but may start focusing on other things such as the technology that is used itself or the avatar that they are using. They can go off-task. The virtual world can also be a place where there is too much for them to observe and learn.
CO, on the other hand, can be more effective where the students observe a teacher’s avatar doing tasks and they simply observe and later collaborate to solve a problem.
This is a quantitative study where the researcher later presents numbers and stats to prove the findings as well.
